Text Set

At the beginning of the semester I remember most teachers asking what are our two content areas. Once I told the science teachers that I was math first then science they all said that I’ll change my mind. We are halfway through the semester and I definitely don’t see that happening so I will be doing my text set on the 6th grade mathematics standards in Georgia. The Georgia standards for 6th graders include the number system, geometry, probability, proportions, etc. The standard that I wanted to focus on was MGSE6.NS.1. 6.NS says that students will apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication and division to divide fractions by fractions. MGSE6.NS.1 primarily focuses on creating visual models for dividing fractions by fractions. We worked on a similar concept that relates to this standard in one of my math classes earlier in the semester. The problem that we were faced with is what ways can we explain proportioning fractions without calculations. It sounded harder than what it was, but it ended up actually quite resourceful because you have math drawings that you can fall back on. If you can get a 6th grader to think deeper about math than what they already know, the sky is the limit for their educational potential.

  1. Hi Antjuan!

This looks like a great idea for a text set. And why are people telling you you'll change your mind about math?!
